Pokémon set symbols: identify the set on your card

That little icon near the bottom of the card is the set symbol, and it tells you which expansion your card was pulled from. Match it below, or type the set code, the year, or the number after the slash on the card, and open the set’s priced checklist. Not to be confused with the rarity symbol, the circle, diamond or star beside the card number.

Where to find the set symbol on a card

  • Wizards era (1999–2003): bottom right corner of the artwork box, next to the rarity symbol on the bottom right of the card. Base Set is the famous exception: it has no symbol at all, so a card numbered out of 102 with no mark is Base Set. Shadowless and 1st Edition copies are the same set with a different print.
  • EX through Sun & Moon (2003–2019): bottom right of the card, beside the card number.
  • Sword & Shield and Scarlet & Violet (2020–): bottom left, in a small block with the three-letter set code (PAL, OBF, SVI), the regulation mark (a letter in a box) and the card number. If you can read the code, search it above.
  • Black Star Promos: a black star symbol in place of a set symbol, numbered with a prefix like SWSH123 or SVP 085. Each promo run has its own page under all sets.
  • Number after the slash: the printed size of the set (4/102, 215/203). It narrows the search fast, and a number higher than the total means a secret rare.

Common questions

My card has no set symbol. What set is it?

Almost certainly Base Set (1999), which was printed without a symbol. Check the number: Base Set cards are numbered out of 102. Base Set 2 (2000) reprints the same cards but carries its own symbol and is numbered out of 130.

What is the difference between the set symbol and the rarity symbol?

The set symbol is a small picture unique to each expansion. The rarity symbol is the circle (common), diamond (uncommon) or star (rare and up) printed next to the card number; see the rarity chart. Modern cards add a three-letter set code and a regulation-mark letter in a box.

Where is the set symbol on a Pokémon card?

Wizards-era cards: bottom right of the artwork box. EX to Sun & Moon: bottom right of the card by the number. Sword & Shield and Scarlet & Violet: bottom left, next to the set code and regulation mark.

Can I identify a set from the card number alone?

Often. The number after the slash is the printed set size, so 4/102 can only be Base Set and 215/203 is an Evolving Skies secret rare. Type that number into the filter above to see every set with that size.
