Hyper Rare Pokémon cards

The most valuable Hyper Rare card is Mega Charizard Y ex 294/217 (Ascended Heroes), worth about $405 ungraded. 82 English cards carry this rarity, from Scarlet & Violet (2023) to Pitch Black (2026), across the Scarlet & Violet and Mega Evolution eras.

A Hyper Rare is a gold card: the whole card, including the artwork, is printed in gold with an etched texture. In Scarlet & Violet era sets the rarity symbol is three gold stars. Hyper Rares began with Scarlet & Violet in 2023, and they take the place of the gold secret rares printed in earlier eras. Each set has only a few, usually gold versions of ex Pokémon, Trainer items and energy cards, numbered above the set total.

TCGplayer's count put the odds of pulling a specific Hyper Rare in a Scarlet & Violet set between about one in 300 and one in 1,000 packs. The Mega Evolution sets that followed added the Mega Hyper Rare, a separate rarity with its own symbol.

Because Hyper Rares are the rarest cards in many sets, they often carry the highest print scarcity, but not always the highest price. Collectors tend to prefer the painted Special Illustration Rares, so a gold card of a popular Pokémon is what sells best. Pikachu ex (Prismatic Evolutions) from Prismatic Evolutions and Pikachu ex (Surging Sparks) from Surging Sparks are the leading Pikachu examples. Charizard ex (Obsidian Flames) from Obsidian Flames and Team Rocket's Mewtwo ex (Destined Rivals) from Destined Rivals show the appeal of Charizard and Mewtwo.

The etched gold surface scratches and shows fingerprints easily, so condition makes a large difference. Sleeve a Hyper Rare as soon as it comes out of the pack.
