Shining Pokémon cards

The most valuable Shining card is Shining Charizard 107/105 (Neo Destiny), worth about $2,415 ungraded. 16 English cards carry this rarity, from Neo Revelation (2001) to Shining Legends (2017), across the Wizards of the Coast and Sun & Moon eras.

Shining Pokémon were the first English cards to show Pokémon in their shiny, alternate colors. The word "Shining" is part of the card name. The original run appeared in two Wizards of the Coast sets, Neo Revelation in 2001 and Neo Destiny in 2002, and the idea returned in the Shining Legends set in 2017.

The Neo cards are holofoil rares numbered above the printed set total, so they are also secret rares. Shining Charizard, for example, is numbered 107/105. They are hard to find in top condition, and graded copies with sharp corners and clean holofoil carry large premiums.

The Neo cards are among the most valuable of the early 2000s. Shining Charizard (Neo Destiny) from Neo Destiny is the most wanted, as the first shiny Charizard in the English game. From Neo Revelation, Shining Gyarados (Neo Revelation) and Shining Magikarp (Neo Revelation) form a popular pair, since Magikarp evolves into Gyarados. The Shining Legends cards, such as Shining Mew (Shining Legends), were printed in far larger numbers and sell for much less, but they give newer collectors an affordable way into the rarity.

For the Neo cards, condition and authenticity both matter. Buy high-value copies graded, and check the back and holo pattern against a known genuine card.
